Fereshteh, from Tehran

5 min readBy Jaya Ahsan

We shot Fereshteh in winter, mostly in Tehran. Multilingual sets are rarely as romantic as the trade press makes them sound — there's a translator at the monitor, a translator on the floor, and entire takes that hinge on whether a single Persian word lands the way the director wants.

What I didn't expect: how legible a Bangladeshi sensibility is in a Persian frame. The patience. The long takes. The reluctance to explain. The film opened at Fajr in 2024; we're still finding what it means to have made it.
